John William White was born on 16 November 1892 at Grantham, Lincolnshire, and joined the Royal Navy on 15 February 1916. Initially sent to Portsmouth for training, White was posted to the destroyer Cockatrice on 12 July 1916 and spent the next year carrying out anti-submarine operations in the English Channel. He subsequently completed an internal combustion engine course and was then posted to Barham on 3 January 1922, before being transferred to shore six months later; sold with copied service record.
