The 1st Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles was one of two Gurkha battalions to take part in the Abor Expedition on the North East Frontier of India in 1911-12. On the outbreak of the Great War, the 1st Battalion remained in India until 1916, when it was deployed to Mesopotamia. The 3rd Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles was raised in 1917 from a nucleus of Gurkha officers and soldiers from the 1st and 2nd Battalions and in 1920 deployed to Iraq following the outbreak of the Arab Rebellion. Here it undertook block house duties and rounding-up operations. It returned to India in 1921 and was disbanded.
