William McKay was born at St Andrews, Aberdeen and was a comb maker upon his enlistment in the 72nd Highlanders on 26 December 1866, having previously been a member of the Aberdeenshire Militia. Having seen active service in Afghanistan and Egypt, he transferred to the Scottish Rifles in March 1884; sold with copied roll and service records.
