(x) Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 3 clasps, Tel-El-Kebir, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (12252. Gunr. R. Mc.Dowell. 1/2. --e. R.A.), wear to naming of rank and unit and pitting from Star, otherwise nearly very fine

Robert McDowell was born around 1862 at Belfast, the son of Mary McDowell of Belfast, Ireland. A stonemason by profession, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Newcastle Upon Tyne on 4 May 1881, his papers noting:

'Nose pitted with small pox. Tattooed two stars on back of left forearm and rings on third and fourth left fingers.'

Initially posted to Kilkenny, McDowell served in Egypt and Sudan from 8 August 1882-11 September 1885, being present at the Battle of Abu Klea. Appointed Bombardier on 9 April 1886, he returned to England and served at Woolwich and Coventry, being finally discharged on 3 May 1893; sold with copied service papers confirming entitlement and his status on leaving as an unmarried man with no children.
