Official Stamps
1866 (Oct.) Fiscal Stamps Overprinted "service/postage" in semi-circle in green on Receipt Bill Or Draft stamps
½a. mauve on lilac block of eleven from the 1st. Setting, [3-4], [15-17], [27-29], [39-41], each cancelled with indistinct numeral in diamond of dots with four sharing unclear G.P.O. circular datestamp and tied to piece; two stamps with minor faults, otherwise sound. Believed to be the largest recorded block and a spectacular showpiece multiple. S.G. O19

Note: It was soon found that the supply of "Service" stamps would not be sufficient to cope with the demand and it was not considered advisable to overprint any more of the current postage stamps as these stocks were also becoming very low. Between 4 August and 7 September 1866 sheets of the ½a. "Bill or Draft" stamps were surcharged "SERVICE/POSTAGE". There were two different settings of the overprint, the first being in one horizontal row of twelve, repeated down the sheet
