Charles Davies was born on 21 December 1894 at Ilford, Essex. He joined the Royal Navy on 3 March 1913 and was serving aboard H.M.S. Newcastle at the start of the Great War, being present at the bombardment of Yap and deployment to Valparaiso in search of the armed merchant raider Prinz Eitel Friedrich. In January 1916, Newcastle captured the German ship Mazatlan which was then operating as the American vessel, Edna. Transferred to shore for 3 months, Davies returned to Newcastle for the duration of the war, and later forged a long career with the Royal Navy, being awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 10 May 1931 and shore pensioned on 9 March 1935. Recalled for service during the Second World War, he served 6 months at Chatham with the Royal Marine Division from 1 October 1939, followed by a series of short postings to a wide variety of shore bases.
