James Frederick Durrant was born on 27 December 1899 at Dastrey, Ireland, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 22 January 1918. Transferred to the Royal Air Force on 31 March 1918, he later attended R.A.F. Camp at Blandford on 13 December 1918.
