James Mahoney was born on 15 September 1891 at Bermondsey, London, and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 1 November 1915. Posted to the Kite Balloon Section at Malta, Mahoney returned to Roehampton on 6 October 1917, and later transferred to the Royal Air Force on 31 March 1918.
