Hugh Mowbray Teetzel was born on 27 June 1896, the son of Mrs M. D. Teetzel of 21 Patterson Avenue, Ontario, Canada. Having seen previous service as a Corporal in the Canadian Army, Teetzel transferred to the R.N.A.S. on 9 December 1917, being posted as Temporary Probationary Flight Officer to Greenwich on 16 December 1917 and Vendome on 2 March 1918.
