Wilfrid Beer was born on 7 April 1898, the son of Mr F. Beer of Lynmouth Road, Reading. After attending the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps, Beer attested for the Royal Flying Corps and served as an instructor on the D.H.4 and B.E.2 aircraft, largely being based in the Reading Area. He was later transferred to the Unemployed List in March 1919.
