William John Gidney was born on 16 March 1884 at Torquay, Devon, and work as a gardener prior to joining the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class on 5 September 1900. He served as Able Seaman aboard a number of destroyers during the Great War, being present aboard Manly when in collision with Matchless on 13 March 1915, and later transferring to Tempest. He was posted to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 13 November 1919, and later demobilised on 8 June 1921.
