Lewis Thompson Clark was born on 4 October 1894 at Oldham, Lancashire. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on 5 August 1915 and served as ship's steward aboard the Azalea-class sloop H.M.S. Snowdrop from 24 May 1916. Transferred to the R.N.A.S. as Temporary Probationary Flight Officer on 26 November 1917, he was thus not aboard Snowdrop when she rescued the survivors from the liner R.M.S. Carpathia, which had been torpedoed 3 times and sunk by U-55. Promoted Flight Sub Lieutenant on 14 March 1918, his papers note 'V.G. ability to Command, a keen intelligent officer.'
