Chefoo
International Mail
German Post Office

1896 (27 Oct.) opened-out envelope registered to Berlin from the German ship 'Cormoran' and sent via H. Sietas & Co. with the company dated oval (their forwarding agents handstamp in on the reverse) and bearing, on the reverse, Chefoo 1c. red and 5c. orange tied by the Local Post c.d.s.; the address side with Chefoo "Registered" handstamp in black, German Eagle 20pf. (2) tied by Shanghai c.d.s. (30.10) and with the associated registration label. There is some wrinkling and creasing as expected on a large envelope and a couple of edge reinforcements. A fine and important cover.

An appealing cover from Chefoo but not carried by the Shanghai Local Post to Shanghai. International registered mail is very scarce, this is the only know example sent from a German ship. Signed by Peter Holcombe. Photo
