1896 (c.) 20 cash dull blue on wove paper, close to very large margins all round; there is a horizontal crease at the very foot of the stamp and slight thinning from an old hinge. A fine example of this mysterious and evocative stamp. Very few examples have been recorded. Photo

Located approximately fifty kilometers north-east of Canton, Tungkuan was an important local trading centre. It's importance could well have made it a worthy addition to the Shanghai Local Post though its proximity to Hong Kong may have made this a much easier route for transmission of mail


1896年間東莞書信館弍拾文樣票， 淡藍色印於厚無紋紙上， 無齒， 四邊邊紙寬度不一， 票下端有橫摺痕， 背有輕微貼痕， 存世只有數枚， 珍稀可知. 東莞位置廣州東北約五十公里處， 曾是重要的地方貿易中心， 雖然不是條約中的通商口岸， 由於商業需要， 因此也曾深思在此開設書信館， 更方便地連接香港之郵遞.
