Auction: 19031 - The Lou Manzi and A. J. Simms Collections of British Banknotes & other properties
Lot: 2198

Bank of England, John Brangwyn Page (1970-1980), £1, ND (1978), A01 000010, green and multicolour with Elizabeth II at right and Sir Isaac Newton to reverse,
(EPM B337), uncirculated and contained within a very attractive green Morocco leather presentation case, the front embossed in gold with the 'seated Britannia' vignette and the inside front cover with similar embossing to read 'BANK OF ENGLAND', 'FEBRUARY 1978'. The leather folder is itself contained within an envelope marked: 'PERSONAL: H.N. ECCLESTON ESQ., R.E., A.R.W.S, BANK OF ENGLAND PRINTING WORKS, DEBDEN'. Not only a very low-number first-issue, but the inclusion of the envelope and presentation folder make this extremely rare; examples hardly ever appear on the market. As a point of interest, Harry Norman Eccleston OBE was the first full-time artist and designer of banknotes at the Bank of England and in addition to an OBE was also holder of an honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Wolverhampton for his services to banknote design and printmaking.
