Lot: 2085

Bank of England, John Gordon Nairne (1902-1918), £100, Portsmouth 27 March 1912, serial number Y/29 12499, black and white, ornate crowned vignette of Britannia top left, 'I promise to pay to Bearer on demand the sum of One Hundred Pounds' in text at centre, value in black tablet low left, printed serial number, date and signature,
(EPM B208fi for type, Pick 308 for type), in PMG holder 63 EPQ Choice Uncirculated. This note is of the highest rarity; a beautiful £100 and for issue at Portsmouth. For interest and provenance, this example was presented to a high-ranking Bank official on the closing of the Portsmouth Branch and was overprinted 'SPECIMEN' in red to circumvent the giving of cash to a Bank official! This note is an issued example and is one of only two extant today. A definite highlight for any collection of British banknotes
