1948 Gandhi composite essay showing village hut and Indian flag, large central feature bi-lingually inscribed "apostle of truth & nonviolence" surrounding a map of India, spinning wheel and Torch of Truth and non-violence, all handpainted in black, shades of grey and Chinese white, and with head and shoulders photo portrait of "Bapu" at right, the whole executed 340x170mm. on card 350x190mm. and with handstamp of the designer, Harilal Banker at lower left corner. A wonderful item of artwork submitted at the time of the forthcoming issue. Photo

Note: The essay is accompanied by a May 1945 copy of "The Philately", magazine, Vol. 1, No. 1, in which this essay is illustrated with details of the design and stating that it was was originally submitted to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Director-General, Posts & Telegraphs, New Delhi, and an August 1945 copy of "The Philatelic Journal of India" in which illustrations of the forthcoming stamp issue designs are shown
