Kingdom of Two Sicilies
George Prince Regent
1817 (6 November) LS written from Carlton House to King Ferdinand I announcing the death of Princess Charlotte said to have occured at "half past two o'clock this morning". Signed "George PR" on mourning paper folded in the usual manner to a thin rectangle, sealed in black wax bearing the King's crest and attaching black silk ribbon, back seal on reverse has been cut from page. A letter with great poignancy. Photo

Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817) was born to George as Prince of Wales and his wife Caroline of Brunswick. As such, she was George's only legitimate daughter, and King George III's only legitimate grandchild. Britain mourned the death of Princess Charlotte in their masses. Princess Charlotte had been a redeeming feature of the unpopular 'mad' King George III's reign. The event meant there was suddenly great pressure on the unmarried sons of the King to find wives.
