Queen Mary's Dolls' House
A complete correspondence ranging from 1922-24 between the Queen Mary's household and the St. Ives artist, William Cave Day regarding the acquisition of artwork to furnish the Dolls' House. The group included two signed letters from Princess Marie Louise soliciting Day's work, one from St James's Palace, the other from Wretham Hall. These are accompanied by facsimiles of the artist's submission letter and two copies of the submitted artwork, one in graphite, the other in colour. Following this is an admission card to Mr. W. Cave Day granting admission to the Dolls' House exhibition and a printed letter on Buckingham Palace notepaper thanking contributors to the Dolls' House, describing it as "the most perfect present that anyone could receive", with its cover.
A fascinating and full group with multiple interests. Photo
Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the Queen Mary's Dolls' House, under commission from the 1920s and completed in 1924. Artists, writers, furniture makers and craftsmen across the county were enlisted to fill its miniature rooms with to scale furnishings. Around 700 artists were approached for submissions of their works and the Royal Collection Trust lists Day's offering as being commissioned for the library in the Queen Mary's Dolls' House - (RCIN 926926)
