William C. Oswell was an African explorer who accompanied David Livingstone during his discovery of Lake Ngami in 1849 and the Zambesi in 1851. His friendship was recognised by Livingstone in giving his name to his third son. This letter was written by him just two months after David Livingstone‘s death.
