Robert Riddell Esq was a member of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of Western India, as was subsequently author to: "A Manual on Gardening for Western and Southern India", published in 1856. Back home, in the year following the production of the Merit medal, Hancocks would also be granted from March 1856 the sole official warrant to produce the Victoria Cross, a commission they retain to the present day.
