Society for the Promotion of Scientific Industry, Manchester, 1873, AE Prize Medal, by Elkington, inscribed: "Exhibition of Appliances for the Economy of Labour, J D Ashworth, Consolidated Emery Wheels, 1875" (61mm (Allen Pt 4; cf. DNW M4/18), good very fine, in ill-fitting contemporary case

John Dawson Ashworth (1865-1946), was educated at the Manchester Grammar and Technical Schools, going on to serve an apprenticeship from 1879 to 1883 with Messrs. Sharp Stewart and Company, Ltd., locomotive builders, and later Messrs. John Hetherington, Ltd., machine tool manufacturers.

Only 20, he was charged with the drawing office at the Manchester Corporation's gas works. Whilst in post, he often lectured for the City and Guilds Institute on gas manufacture at the Manchester Technical School.

In 1898 he relocated to Portsmouth as an engineer and general manager for the Portsea Island Gas Light Company, from where he oversaw the design of a complete new gas works at Hilsea. He passed away, aged 82 in 1946.
