He was a Anglo-North American history painter who studied the Wars of Independence and the Seven Year's War. He was latterly the second President of the Royal Academy, subsequently refusing a knighthood in favour of a peerage. He would describe Art as "the representation of human beauty, ideally perfect in design, graceful and noble in attitude." Although the Death of General Wolfe is perhaps his most enduring work, he was also responsible for: The Treaty of Penn with the Indians {1772} and The Death of Nelson {1806} amongst many others. He was laid to rest in St Paul's Cathedral.
