It will be noted that the portraiture employed by Lauer and Wyon for these Commemorative Medals had previously been utilised by for the production of trial and Patterns for the Currency during the 1880s and for the reformed coinage issued for the Golden Jubilee. Indeed the second and this examples closely resemble the patterns produced by Messrs Spink and Son of Crowns and Sixpences in gold, silver, bronze and aluminium.
