Republic of Cuba, 'Liberty' Loan, 1869, bond for $1000, #1963, issued in New York, signed by Jose Morales Lemus, vignette of 'Liberty' top centre, ornate border, green and black, text in Spanish with English translation on reverse. Loan raised in New York to fight the 10-years war against Spanish rulers between 1868 and 1878 which was unsuccessful. Two further wars ensued culminating in the Spanish American War of 1898 when Spain lost its control over Cuba. Jose Morales Lemus was a wealthy lawyer and Independence figure who died in 1870. Has been torn in half and rejoined, rust mark top left, a little toned otherwise VF and rare.
