1945 (11 July) Air Force C-47 Douglas Crash
1945 (6 July) "Concessionary rate" envelope from Sgt. W.A. Grassie at F.P.O. 748 (Naples) to Johannesburg, a little charred and sealed with plain brown tape, showing "salvaged mail" handstamp in violet and, on reverse, bearing explanatory leaflet, and (8 July) charred 3d. registered envelope, uprated with 4d. pair and 1/-, from F.P.O. 520 and with S.A. A.P.O. 3 datestamp (Naples) to Lt. Dicks (a crew member of Liberator KH152 that was shot down over Krakow on night of 16/17 October 1944, he and one other being the only survivors of a crew of eight) at Port Elizabeth, complete with different explanatory leaflet, both applied after the covers were returned to the F.P.O. of origin. Note: At the end of the war some South Africans who were P.O.W.'s in Italy and subsequently interred in Switzerland were flown home. The South African Air Force Douglas C-47, with some of these officers on board, crashed into Lake Victoria shortly after take-off from Kisumu Airport. The four crew members together with 24 passengers all died in the incident
