Note: Smith had to abort the flight and forced to land due to engine failure some 50 miles from Port Etienne. He walked this distance carrying only water and the mail. In his autobiography he wrote that he initially left the mail behind and went back for it after remembering the Union Airways motto where "the mail must get through". He completed his journey by flying with Aeropostale to Dakar and thence by boat to England
