BB, good to large margins all round, tied by red Maltese Cross cancellation to entire letter from St. Petersburg, Russia, dated 20 Nov. 1840, addressed to Cox's Hotel, London, with straight line "Franco" and framed St. Petersburg handstamps, rated (on reverse) 1/8, the rate to England via Prussia, with arrival of Dec., re-directed by the Hotel to Kearsney-Abbey which is where the 1d. Black was applied and with London d.s. (12.7); fine. A great rarity. The earliest recorded cover from Russia bearing an adhesive stamp. P. Holcombe (1995) and B.P.A. (2014) Certificates. Photo
