1794 (10 July) entire letter from Major Richard Irving to his wife in Scotland, rated "1/-" (deleted) and "1/7", showing fair to fine "antigua" handstamp (Proud Type PS 11 State 1) with London transit d.s. (11.9) on reverse. The contents include "... our unfortunate miscarriage at pointe a pitre we lost many brave fellows that day. Officers killed, wounded and taken prisoners amount to about 16 - I was not with them. My Grenadiers with the 65th Regt. and a body of sailors were on a hill close to Fleur de Paye Fort which we were to have stormed if the other had succeeded.". Photo
