Putnam/Aden/Arabia/Asia/(On board the Bark Argentine, from his wife in Rachel in Manchester, New Hampshire, with large despatch c.d.s., straight line "paid", red "24", red Paid London transit datestamp (11.3) and, on reverse, Boston (22.2), New York (23.2) transits and Aden arrival of 10 Sept.; fine. The earliest known letter from the United States to Aden. A showpiece for the advanced Arabia Collector. Photo

Note: The diary of Rachel Hurd Putnam, 1855-56, in which she writes affectingly of her daily life whilst her merchant captain husband was at sea, is now held in the Peaboby Essex Museum in Salem, Massachussets.
