Japanese Post Office: 1896 (3 Feb.) envelope to New York bearing Japan 5s. Koban tied by "shanghai i.j.p.o." c.d.s. (8.2) with a fine strike of "nanking local post" dated oval in purple alongside; the reverse with Shanghai Local Post c.d.s. (7.2) in blue, Yokohama (18.2), San Francisco and Brooklyn arrival (10.3). The earliest Nanking cover sent through the Japanese Post Office. Photo
