Agency Mail
Japanese Post Office
1887 (Dec.) envelope to Kentucky, U.S.A. mailed through the Japanese Post Office, bearing 5s. Koban cancelled by cork propeller postmark, a very fine strike of the large garter "local post agency/nanking" in turquoise, I.J.P.O. Shanghai (10.12) and Yokohama (20.12) c.d.s.; on the reverse is Shanghai Local Post c.d.s. (6.12) in blue, San Francisco (7.1) and part arrival c.d.s. A delightful cover and one of the finest examples of the large garter postmark which is of particular significance here being on the address side. Photo
