1897 New Currency Surcharges
Large Figures Surcharge, Covers
10c. international Rate plus 10c. Registration
1897 (13 July) opened-out envelope registered to Austria bearing wide setting 30c. on 24ca. with variety of three type C tied by Hankow Dollar dater and, on the reverse, small figures ½c. on 3ca. block of eight with similar cancellation and tied by Shanghai Dollar dater (16.7); the 30c. stamp on the address side is partly covered by three France "Chine" 25c. (defects) but leaving the positional variety clear and tied by "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s., there is a fine strike of large "R" in red , French registered handstamp and other transit marks. An intriguing cover paying double weight and registration (30c.) but it is unclear why the additional 4c. was added on the reverse, possibly for carriage on the overland route. Photo
