1897 (7 Jan.) cover front from the French Consulate in Shanghai to the French Legation in Peking bearing strip of three 4c. on 4ca. tied by Customs/Shanghai c.d.s.; some light soiling. This is the earliest postally used Imperial Post cover. Photo

Postally used covers dated before the official opening of the Imperial Post Office are extremely scarce, only about fifteen covers or fronts have been recorded. The official opening of the new Post Office was 2nd February, but the new stamps were available in Shanghai from 2nd January. A similar cover front from the same correspondence is in the Dr Chang Min Sheng collection


1897年1月7日上海法國領事寄北京大使實寄封,貼洋銀肆分蓋於肆分銀三連票,銷上海海關日戳,信封輕微染汙,這是最早期的大清國辦郵政實寄封._x000D_ _x000D_ 大清國辦郵政局成立前的實寄封是信罕有的,有記錄的大約只有十五件左右,大清國辦郵政局正式於1897年2月20日開辦,但加蓋改洋銀為單位的新票己於1月2日在上海己準備了. 在張敏生醫生的收藏集內有另一相似的實寄封.
