Auction: 19004 - Coins and Commemorative Medals: Spring Auction
Lot: 514
India, States, Travancore, Bala Rama Varma (1798-1810), Half-Chuckram, 0.17g, conch turned to the left, with three annulets within crescents above and to right, rev. sudarsana chuckram within a rayed border, together with other Chuckrams (7) of later manufacture, and another on a small flan of same style described as a Half-Chuckram (KM 7var, A20, 21; also see Sarasan, Traversing Travancore 182 (attributed to Rani Lakshmi Bai) for 2-Chuckram of the type), the Half-Chuckram of Bala Rama Varma fine / very fine, the other Chuckrams generally very fine, the first exceedingly rare (9)
The Half-Chuckram of Bala Rama Varma appears to be an uncatalogued coin. Usually these tiny coins have beaded borders and only one annulet within a crescent directly above the conch on the obverse. Beena Sarasan lists a 2-Chuckram of the type (coin182, p.113, Traversing Travancore through the Ages on Coins, Pooma Publications, Calicut, 2006). There is every possibilty that this is the corresponding Half-Chuckram, possibly the only one recorded.
