Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill (4513 Pte. J. Gilfoy. Durham Lt. Infy.), minor edge bruise, otherwise good very fine
John Gilfoy was born in 1871 at Dublin, Ireland, and worked as a coal miner before attesting for the Durham Light Infantry on 22 June 1892. He served 6 years in the East Indies, before being posted to South Africa from 24 January 1900-13 September 1902. On 25 May 1901 he was placed in confinement and tried by District Court Martial at Pretoria - sentenced to 112 imprisonment with hard labour, he was fined a further £1.0 for drunknenness on duty. Returning to service in October, he was tried for a second time at Brandfort and sentenced to 42 days of field imprisonment for a similar offence. Gilfoy returned home to England and was discharged on 21 March 1903; sold with copied service record.
