1862-70 "Empire" Laureated Issue
5f. grey-violet, uncharacteristically quite well centred preserving the design completely exhibited, remarkably fresh, tied to insured (2,000 francs) envelope to Poitiers, paying 4 francs for the insured value, by "Vendeuvre-De-Poitou/19 Fevr 77" c.d.s.'s, with red "Chargé" alongside, with red wax seal on reverse, following the norm for this mail, and arrival. A visually striking exhibition item due to the cleanness of the envelope, the outstanding freshness of the franking and the strikes of the cancellation being harmoniously applied and neatly struck; undoubtedly one of the finest, if not the finest single franking of this, the highest denomination in the classic period. Calves certificate (1998). Spink Maury 33, €28,500. Photo
