In 1878 Netherlands Indies postal agencies opened in the Straits Settlements at Penang and Singapore. During their 43 years existence both offices played an important role in the despatch of mails from, to and within the Netherlands East Indies
1879 (9 Sept.) Netherlands Indies 12½c. grey card (HG 2) to Holland and redirected locally, cancelled by "89" in diamond of dots (for Singapore type 2), showing "n.i. exp. kant. singapore" c.d.s. (Type 3a; 9.9) and with various transit and arrival datestamps. Early usage, very scarce. Photo
