Postal Forgeries
The forgeries were used in Sydney during March and April 1932 for mailing forger Irish Sweepstale Lottery tickets and circulars. An example was received through the mail by a South Australian collector, Dr. E.C. Black, who noticed differences and asked the post office for information on what he supposed was a new stamp design. The post office took immediate action, and using the return address printed on Dr. Black's envelope, investigators received in reply Sweepstake tickets enclosed in an envelope franked with a forged 2d. Sydney Harbour Bridge stamp. Police action followed, and eventually a Mr. Charles Jackson was arrested posting covers bearing forged stamps. A search of his premises yielded quantities of both forgeries in sheets, and after questioning, the arrest of a process engraver, Henry Elderfield, followed. Elderfield had produced the plates for both forgeries. Both perpetrators were brought to trial, convicted and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment
