Mail to United Kingdom
1859 (3 Sept.) entire ex the Martin Turner correspondence to Glasgow, bearing 4a. black (2, one bisected diagonally) and 8a. carmine (2), the latter lightly cancelled "B/147", the former apparently uncancelled, showing "penang/p.o." double-ring d.s. in red at lower right and, on reverse, clear arrival c.d.s.; both 4a. with some lightly stained perfs. Extremely rare. This is the only example we record of this rate to the UK and only one of two bisect covers from Penang. (CJS). Photo

Note: Whilst the bisect is not tied we believe this franking to be genuine. It is from a well known correspondence containing many bisect covers. Many of the letters in this correspondence were numbered. This is numbered "S. 1193" and the date of the cover falls in the correct sequence.
