Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich (1878 - 1918) was the youngest son of Tsar Alexander III of Russia. He was asked to be Tsar after Nicholas II abdicated in 1917 but never accepted. He was imprisoned by the Bolsheviks and murdered in 1918 at the age of 39.

Ferdinand Thormeyer (1858 - 1944), went to Russia aged about 18, but it is not known exactly why. He had been there for ten years, and had trained there as a teacher before being given his position with the imperial children. Even after returning to Switzerland in 1899, he remained strongly attached to Russia. During the First World War he was a Red Cross delegate, and visited Russian prisoners of war.
