Grand Duke Nicholas Alexandrovich "Nixa", eldest son of Emperor Alexander II, was born at the Alexander Palace, St Petersburg. In the summer of 1864 he was engaged to be married to Princess Dagmar of Denmark, daughter of King Christian IX. He took ill while on a tour of southern Europe, and died on 24 April 1865 at the Villa Bermont, Nice, France. His fiancée later married his brother Alexander, and they ascended the throne of Russia in 1881 as Emperor Alexander III and Marie Feodorovna.
