Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington
1847 (September) small parcel tag with printed address to the Military Secretary, Horse Guards, London with autograph "on Her Majesty's Service" and "Wellington". The reverse with printed "Field Marshal His Grace the Duke of Wellington" with "Ec Ec Ec, Walmer Castle, Dover" as a return address; this side with London (29.9) and Dover (30.9) circular postmarks whilst the autograph side with undated Walmer, Dover (1.10) and London postmarks. A wonderful, if diminutive, item of postal and social history. Photo

Wellington retired from political life in 1846, although he remained Commander-in-Chief, and returned briefly to the spotlight in 1848 when he helped organise a military force to protect London during that year of European revolution
