Robert Rich
1629 (1 May) certificate from Commissioners in the county of Essex, more specifically of the Hundred of Rochford, for a lay subsidy granted by Parliament for Charles I "Beinge the last of Five Subsidies". Addressed to the Lord Treasurer, the Barons of the Exchequer Court, and other officials. Bearing the wafer seal of Robert Rich in the left margin and signed "Ro: Warwick" and "Arthur Herris".


The document states that Deodatus Staverton is assessed within the parish of Eastwood, where he and his family have lived for more than a year, at £10 in goods, "as it doth appere, by the extreact and Roll of the Assessment, and Rates of the said Hundred, which is certified and remaineth in his Majesties Exchequer" and has paid accordingly. Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick (1587-1658). Well known as Lord High Admiral on the Parliamentary side in later years (1642-45 and 1648-49), and as a long standing supporter of colonial activities in North America. The present document illustrates his activities in Essex as Joint Lord Lieutenant of Essex. Interestingly, although this document certified that a subsidy payment has been made, Rich was among those who refused to subscribe to the forced loan of 1626 and to pay ship money.
