Dudley Carleton, Secret Service
1617 (c.) autograph letter, containing a request by Sir Dudley Carleton for £125 as allowance "for postage of Letters, intelligences and other Secret Services" for the months of March - May, 1617. Written on paper folded in the usual manner bearing a filing endorsement to the reverse. Signed "Raphe Winwood" and "Dudley Carleton". Photo
Dudley Carleton (1573-1632), Viscount Dorchester, diplomat. His first position was as ambassador's secretary in Paris 1602, he then became ambassador to Venice, then the United Provinces, and finally Secretary of State between 1628-32. He was regarded as the "most sagacious and successful diplomat in Europe".
Ralph Winwood (1563-1617), diplomat, and later Secretary of State until the year of his death. He could only have signed this document in the last months of his highly successful life.
