Early Letters and Handstamps
Two-line Datestamp
1815 (23 Dec.) entire letter ex the Walters correspondence to Kendal, marked "2/3 P.D.", slightly under-inked "tortola/23 dec 15" datestamp (Proud Type PS8) and largely fine strike of the very rare circular-framed "paid/to/england" in red; the letter slightly soiled though a very rare cover showing the sole recorded example of the "paid/to/england" handstamp used from the Virgin Islands. Photo

Note: Two strikes of a similar handstamp are recorded from Jamaica on letters of 1810 and 1811. These show a large capital "P" and are struck in violet. The writer forwards a plea from a slave who requests that he can purchase himself for the lowest price. He is old, his health is in a bad way and he is afraid of being sold to a hard master.
