Early Letters and Handstamps
Straight-line Handstamp
1796 (2 Mar.) entire letter from Neil Steward at Tobago, via Tortola, to his sister in Perth and redirected to Dunkeld, rated "4", "3" (deleted) and "1/7", marked p. Catherine & Elisa, Capt Robertson, Q.D.C." at lower left, showing good to fine "tortola" handstamp (Proud Type PS4) and red straight-line "perth" in circle with London transit datestamp on reverse; the letter a little soiled and with heavy vertical filing crease. A rare marking. Photo

Note: Interesting contents referring to the islands of Tortola, Grenada and St. Vincent being peaceful, the latter, having had a "severe engagement lately in which we have lost a good many men and some Officers but nothing to what the Sans Cullotes have lost who when they found they could not carry off their killed and wounded put them all in a house together and set fire to it and burnt them (dead or alive) to ashes"
