1d. Black on Red
Value Omitted

One Of Only Two Recorded Examples Available To Collectors
1d. black on red, variety value omitted and showing the merest trace of the letter "y" of "penny" as all known examples do, fresh and very fine mint. Exceedingly rare with only one other example available to collectors. B.P.A. Certificate (1961). S.G. 128a, £32,000. Photo

Note: This item is accompanied by a copy of a 1902 letter from Bright and Son, London to the Postmaster at San Fernando, requesting examples of this rarity. A note at the foot of the page states "Only 7 were sold four (4) of which were posted on letters and they were thoroughly inked over by the Postal authorities consequently of no use.

Sir John Wilson recorded that out of one pane of sixty, fifty-one were returned to London and destroyed. Only three mint examples are recorded. One is in the Royal Philatelic Collection, and one was sold by Christie's Robson Lowe in 1987 and was subsequently offered in the Ben Ramkissoon collection. This example almost certainly originally formed a pair with the item offered above. Of the four examples stated to have been used on letters to Barbados, nothing further has ever been heard
