Cape of Good Hope
Pre-Adhesive Period

District Post Offices
Somerset (Type CC 11)
Undated entire from Somerset West to Cape Town, rated "3d" in red ink, showing fine circular "post office/Crown/somerset" handstamp with Crowned "post office/cape/town/general" c.d.s. alongside, fine. Photo

Note: First post office at Somerset West opened in 1822, and in Somerset East in 1825. Because of the great variance in distance from Cape Town, the rates from Somerset East were much greater than from Somerset West. The 3d. single sheet from Somerset West compared to the 1/1d. rate from Somerset East. It would appear both were issued an identical handstamp.
