(x) Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Penny, 1.64g, Expanding Cross / Trefoil type, Shrewsbury, Godesbrand, + edpe: - 'rd rex, diademed and armoured bust left, trefoil sceptre in front, rev. + godesbrand on scre, expanding cross with circle and pellet at centre, a small cross pattée ineach angle (BMC type Vb, cf. 1179 (moneyer Wulmær); cf. N.823.1; cf. S.1177 variety not listed), very fine, extremely rare, the second recorded example of this variety

This variety with a small cross pattée in each angle of the reverse cross is noted in the British Museum Catalogue as type Vb, where it refers to the single example in the Museum collection, also from the Shrewsbury mint, by the moneyer Wulmær, which at the time was the only known example. This coin, by the Shrewsbury moneyer Godesbrand, is the second recorded example.

North 823.1 notes the variety, but describes it in error as having 'a small cross pattée in three angles of the reverse cross.'
